PRESS RELEASE: BENIN MEDIUM WAVE LICENSE ISSUED

On 4 July 2006 in Cotonou, Benin a license signing ceremony took place allowing Trans World Radio to begin broadcasting the gospel on medium wave (AM) from within West Africa.

Representing TWR International at the signing of the license, Rev. Abdoulaye Sangho (TWR-West Africa Director) said, “My heart was full of joy to see that the prayers of the whole family of TWR around the world are answered today.”
Two people in particular were in his thoughts that day, Rev. Stephen Boakye-Yiadom (TWR-Africa International Director) and Mr. David Tucker (TWR-International President). “These two have spent much energy and many resources on this project. I, a small and humble servant, am the person who has the honour to sign this historic document. And besides these are the thousands of Christians I have met in churches across West Africa who have been praying for this project.”

Late 2002 Trans World Radio began discussions on the possibility of a new transmitting site in Benin. On 10 June 2003 then President Kerikou, a believer, began the process which today has resulted in a license to broadcast from near Parakou, Benin.

The new Benin radio facility, set to begin broadcasting in April 2007, will transmit via medium wave to West Africa in a way not seen since a civil war resulted in the destruction of Radio ELWA in 1990. Programming for the new facility will centre on evangelism and Bible teaching. Rev. Sangho shared that “partnerships are being formed with several individuals, churches, missions, and organizations that have been waiting and praying for this opportunity to come and air the word of God through radio.” A group of African writers are already hard at work on scripts and translation preparing programmes for the new Benin station. FM stations can be heard in several large cities of West Africa, but step outside of the city and the signal is gone. Medium wave and short wave will fill the gap.

Praise the Lord for approval to continue the new Benin Transmitter Project. Pray for the erection of a medium wave antenna, completion of the building, shipping/installation of the transmitters and the issuance of a short wave license.
