BROADCASTING FROM BENIN - "THE WAY OF RIGHTEOUSNESS"

Since God opened miraculous doors for TWR to start broadcasting in Benin in February 2008, exciting things have been happening. Programmes in various West African languages are being broadcast on a daily basis.

John, the Special Focus Co-ordinator at TWR-Africa shared some information about one of the current popular programmes, “The Way of Righteousness”. This programme is part of TWR’s orality strategy and is broadcast daily (Sunday to Saturday) to the Fulakunda, Pulaar and Tukulor people.

“The Way of Righteousness” is an English translation of “Yoonu Njub” – a series of radio programmes originally written in the Wolof language for the Muslim people of Senegal, West Africa. It has been translated for the Pulaar people and is broadcast from the Benin transmitter as “Laawal Peewal”. The series covers messages from the Torah of Moses, the Psalms and the Gospel. These one hundred 15-minute lessons take the listener on a journey through the Scriptures to view God’s unchangeable purpose for mankind and to hear God’s answer to the age-old question: “How can a man be righteous before God?”

The Fulakunda and Tukulor are Muslim peoples who follow the teachings of Mohammed and adhere strongly to virtues and good morals such as justice, honesty, generosity and patience. Although Christian resources are available to them, only a very small number of Fulakunda and Tukulor have become Christians. Though portions of the Bible have been translated into their language, very few of these people can read.

Muslims believe that God has revealed His will through four sacred books (Torah, Psalms, Gospel and Qur’an). Yet few Muslims ever have the opportunity to hear the Good News of God through these writings. These one hundred concise lessons offer that opportunity.

Many are surprised to learn that the Qur'an commands Muslims to believe the Torah (Taurat), the Psalms (Zabur), and the Gospel (Injil) - all of which have been carefully preserved in the Hebrew and Greek Scriptures known as the Bible.

The Bible is by far the best documented book of antiquity and the subject of the validity of the Bible is dealt with briefly in lesson #90. It was deliberately decided not to spend a lot of time on it. Why not? Because "the proof is in the pudding". Taste it! God's Word, when studied chronologically as in this series, does not need to be defended, it needs to be read and heard.

"For the word of God is living and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart. Nothing in all creation is hidden from God's sight. Everything is uncovered and laid bare before the eyes of him to whom we must give account." (Hebrews 4:12, 13)

The Wolof people of Senegal say, "truth is a hot pepper" and "whoever wants honey must brave the bees". Similarly, the penetrating power of God's Truth and everlasting sweetness of God's way of righteousness make going after it worth every possible risk (even ostracism, persecution, and physical death).

“You will seek me and find me when you search for me with all your heart” (Jeremiah 29:13)

PRAYER POINTS :

  • Ask the Holy Spirit to grant wisdom and favour to the few mission agencies that are targeting the Fulakunda and Tukulor.

  • Pray for effectiveness of the Jesus film among the Fulani.

  • Ask God to anoint the Gospel as it goes forth via radio in their area.

  • Pray that God will call Christian educators to teach these people how to read the Word of God.

  • Take authority over the spiritual principalities and powers that are keeping the Fulani and Tukulor bound.
  • Ask the Lord to bring forth a triumphant Fulani and Tukulor church for the glory of His name.
