Most of us take basic essentials like water and electricity for granted. We cannot imagine living in a world without these two commodities. However many people living in rural parts of Africa have to walk miles to fill a bucket of stagnant water and light is supplied by candles made from animal fat. Any idea of purchasing batteries for to power a radio is a luxury most cannot afford - even if they were available locally.
Trans World Radio-Africa distributes Grundig wind-up radios in Mozambique, Angola, Namibia and Cote d'Ivoire. In 2006, with the completion of the Benin Transmitting Station, TWR wants to expand wind-up radio distribution to churches in Benin. Many of these radios are given to church leaders in communities where Bibles are of little use due to illiteracy amongst the local people. With the absence of electricity and little or no means to purchase batteries, the wind-up radio is ideal for the task, providing its own electricty through a dynamo and rechargeable battery.
Church leaders use these radios for evangelism and as a Bible study tool, collecting together groups ranging from seven people to more than a hundred. After listening to the programme, they spend up to two hours discussing the subject and content of the programme they've just heard."
This is an ideal opportunity for individuals and smaller church congregations to contribute meaningfully to the lives of people who live in extremely difficult situations across the continent of Africa. Your donation of $ 60 can bring salvation, hope and desperately needed encouragement to the lives of countless people. Why not contribute to this project online through Givengain and allow TWR to purchase one or more radios for people who desperately need them. |
