TWR Burundi TV Partnership

makeshift TV studioTWR Burundi recently became the centre of a group project of at least eight organizations. Since May, the radio studios of our national partner office have been transformed into a television soundstage for the production of a series to reach youth on both sides of the violence and promote peace, reconciliation and respect for human rights.

In April violent protests broke out in Bujumbura, the capital city of Burundi. Children have been unable to attend school for over a month while roadblocks and demonstrations appear frequently.

May through August of 2015 Burundi holds a series of votes. Dozens have died and many more injured in protests and an unsuccessful coup challenging the legality of the current president’s decision to seek a third term. Many fear the unrest could herald the return of ethnic war in this country. The Burundian Civil War (1993–2005) claimed more than 300,000 lives and sparked an even greater genocide in neighbouring Rwanda, where estimates say as many as a million died during a 100-day period in 1994.

This joint effort of Christian ministries in the country includes:

  • ALARM (African Leadership and Reconciliation Ministries)
  • Burundi Bible Society
  • Campus Crusade for Christ
  • Great Lakes Outreach (GLO)
  • Harvest Ministry for Christ
  • Partners Trust International (PTI)
  • Scripture Union

The group will produce as many episodes as possible. Each half hour episode airs on local TV at 9:30PM Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays while an audio version is broadcast on local FM radio stations at 8:30AM Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays.
